Yesterday I cried at a commercial for Mother’s Day flowers. The commercial featured children telling their Mom what they love most about her, and then of course they handed over a beautiful bouquet of flowers. It was so sweet and touching that I had to break out the tissues, which are already in limited supply at my house thanks to allergy season.
The moment looked so perfect on TV, but are flowers really enough for a woman who is keeping humans alive while managing a home, job and side-hustle?
It’s time we gave WAHMs what they really want (and totally deserve) for Mother’s Day.
I went right to the source to find out what that is by asking my community of work-at-home Moms to answer this fill-in-the-blank question on my Facebook page:
Most of the answers cost zero.
Popular Mother’s Day gift suggestions included someone to watch the kids for a few hours, extra help with cooking and cleaning, and sleep. No surprise on that last one.
Here are some of the highlights:
“I told my husband what I really want this year is for us to pick a day when he’s going to take the kids out by himself for a few hours – whether it’s to the zoo or just a park in the neighborhood & fun in the backyard… so that I can have the house to myself for that period of time to just get caught up on odd cleaning projects or business tasks or whatever I want.” – Melissa Krawczyk, Mom of 2 (ages 15 months and 3)
“I want an air fryer, a Samsung Gear Fit2, and not to yell at all.” – Te’Amo Blakely, Mom of 4 (ages 17, 11, 9 and 2)
“I want a maid! And an organizer pro to come and help me get rid of paper clutter, and get systems in place that keep me organized. Then, I wouldn’t mind a personal chef.” – Cathy Tardive, Mom of 5 (ages 30, 28, 25, 22, and 13)
“Chips and salsa from my fave restaurant that I don’t have to share!” – Sabrina Gilbert, Mom of 2 (ages 7 and 5)
“My windows to be cleaned for me.” – Royanna Stratmoen, Mom of 3 (ages 17, 20 and 22)
“Sleep.” – Adrienne Smith, Mom of 3 (ages 4, 7 & 8)
“I would seriously love a spa day!” – Brenda Martin, Mom of 2 (ages 11 and 25)
“No yelling from my kids, a good cup of coffee, a nice meal, and I love handmade cards from my kids.” – Jacki Pitkow, Mom of 2 (ages 10 & 12)
Give your wife what she really wants. Watch the kids for a few hours or pick up a duster and clean the house. Better yet, give the kids the duster and make it a team effort. And please let her eat her chips and salsa in peace.
Happy Mother’s Day!
