What do you do? That question can give even the most confident entrepreneurs anxiety, especially if you’re a woman walking into a packed room at a networking event. We’ve come a long way, but my husband still expects me to pick up the dry cleaning, prepare dinner and run a successful business (or two). I think that’s why I see so many woman stumble when asked the “what do you do” question. We do a lot. So we tend to blurt out a title, like, “I’m an accountant.” Or, if you’re a direct seller you might say, “I sell jewelry.” Either way, you’re destined to be pre-judged and put in a box by someone who tuned you out before you got to your second sentence. Networking fail.
Here are 3 Questions That Will Help You Create an Elevator Pitch That Attracts More Clients And Grows Your Biz:
What Makes You Unique? The world is full of thousands of accountants, lawyers, realtors, jewelry reps, Mary Kay ladies, virtual assistants… fill in the blank. No one cares what you do. They care about who you are. Get started crafting your perfect pitch by writing down five things that make you unique, then pick one or two that stand out. If you’re not sure, call your favorite client and ask them why you’re so special.
Who’s Your Ideal Client? I know you’re probably thinking, “I want to do business with everyone!” No, you don’t. No one will refer you to “everyone”. You’ll attract your perfect client and get referrals by asking for them; the smaller the niche the better. For example, a woman at a networking event told me she wanted to do business with hospitals. That’s a niche market, but I still had no idea who she wanted to do business with, so I dug further, asking, “Who at the hospital is your ideal client?” The light bulb went off, and she responded, “Oh! I want to get a meeting with the VP of Marketing.” I happen to know a VP of Marketing at a hospital. Let the connecting begin!
What’s Your Impact? In other words, what problems do you solve? How does what you do make a difference in your clients’ lives? This is a game changer. With a little tweaking, a woman I met at a networking event went from, “I’m a forensic accountant,” to, “I’m an expert at helping women who are going through divorce find the money.” Boom!
So…what about me? Well, I could say I’m an author, keynote speaker, direct seller and/or trainer. Those are all titles. Instead, I say, “I’m the Million Dollar Party Girl. I help Mompreneurs take massive action so they can make more money doing what they love.”
Helping you attract more customers by crafting a perfect elevator pitch is the first start!
